THE EAST VILLAGE / THE LOWER EAST SIDE / LITTLE ITALY / CHINATOWN
These four neighborhoods - distinct as their histories are - share a the common bond of having welcome and served as home to immigrants of one kind or another - either Chinese, Italian, Eastern European, or artist/activist/poet/etc.
The East Village is located east of Fourth Avenue, south of 14th Street and north of Houston Street, with its central retail district being St. Marks Place.
The Lower East Side, for many years the first stop for European immigrants to the U.S., lies east of Broadway in the area below Houston Street and above Chinatown. The central retail district centers around Delancy and Orchard Streets.
Little Italy is centered around Mulberry Street, home to many popular Italian restaurants and bakeries. It runs north/sough north of Canal and south of Houston.
Chinatown, growing by leaps and bounds, has traditionally centered around Canal Street going east and west and Mott Street going north and south. Today the predominantly Chinese district of New York also runs north along The Bowery, east of that along Delancy into the Lower East Side, and along East Broadway, under the Manhattan Bridge.
